I can do them in person, if you’re in the Davidson/Charlotte area, or I can literally do them virtually anywhere. Here I’ve attached a list of potential book club discussion questions for both Between the Sky and the Sea and Ladies’ Day that you can use as a jumping off point.
Book Club Discussion Questions
Between the Sky and the Sea
1. Who were your favorite characters? Your least favorite? Why or why not?
2. Did you find it believable that two people who had been shipwrecked in 1838 would be engaged after four days floating together on a raft? In what ways were the days on the water like a metaphor for a marriage?
3. Were you surprised by the limited rights women had in 1838, including inheritance laws? How did you feel about who Mr.Onslow left the millinery shop to?
4. Why do you think Daniel left Lavinia to return to New Orleans? Were you sympathetic with his reasons for leaving? Overall, did you trust Daniel?
5. What do you think Lavinia learned from her journey to New Orleans?
6. How did you feel about both Peter and Clementine’s actions after William took over?
7. What were your thoughts about what happened between Lavinia and Sarah? Do you think it was possible, as Lavinia hoped, that they could reconcile?
Ladies’ Day
1. Who were your favorite characters? Your least favorite? Why or why not? Did you prefer either one of the voices, Beth’s or Sky’s?
2. Could you sympathize with Beth’s inability to move on from her daughter’s disappearance?
3. How would you react if you learned you had a granddaughter you didn’t know you had? If you learned you had any family member who you hadn’t known about?
4. What do you see as the role or roles of golf in this story, for both Beth and for Sky? Is it a metaphor?
5. What role did Silas’ family play in Sky’s life? Did you sympathize with her actions?
6. Were you ever surprised by the turn of events?
7. What do you think might have caused Julie to leave her family?
